The Phantom’s Curse is a five reel, forty payline slot from gaming giants NetEnt. It stands as the the newest installment in the brand’s Universal Monsters series and, as the name suggests, is based around the French novel The Phantom of the Opera. The slot is playable from as little as 20p up to £200 per spin, and is available across all devices making it the perfect game for all different types of gamers and budgets.

Visually, The Phantom’s Curse is stunning and we’re sure fans of the musical or classic novel will be more than happy with NetEnt’s interpretation. The game is set within the opera hall, with the reels hanging against the seats as if you were getting a view from the stage. Symbols on the reels include characters from the story such as Christine, the subject of the Phantom’s affections, and other items such as daggers, hand mirrors, roses and ruby rings.

The lower value symbols are represented by the four traditional playing card suits (hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades) , whilst the highest value symbol in the game is represented by the Phantom himself and he wil reward you with 10x your wager for a five of a kind combination.

The Phantom's Curse Paytable

Although The Phantom’s Curse’s appeal lies, ultimately, in it’s bonus features, the base game is still very much enjoyable and as the slot pays both ways, there’s still plenty of chances to win big. Furthermore, as the slot boasts a healthy RTP of 96.57% and a maximum win of 800x your wager on every spin, we’d classify this title as medium variance which means it pays out decent amounts, fairly regularly.

Bonus Features

The Phantom’s Curse boasts not one, but three separate bonus features which have each been specifically designed for this title. This means that not only do they all fit the theme perfectly, but they also stand as great examples of NetEnt’s creative flair and keen eye for attention to detail.

The Phantoms Curse Bonus Round

The first feature is the Pick and Click bonus, which is triggered when the stacked Phantom symbol lands fully on reel one, and the stacked Christine symbol lands full on reel five. When the round begins, players are transported to a separate screen where they must pick from eight roses in order to win cash prizes.  Players will be able to continue choosing roses, and therefore picking up coin wins, until they are confronted with a ‘blocker’ symbol. At this point they’ll move on to stage 2 of the round.

In stage 2 of the Pick and Click bonus round, players must choose from three mirrors to reveal a multiplier of either 1x, 2x or 3x. This is then applied to your winnings from stage 1 and means that the round carries the potential to reward players with up to 36x their original stake.

The second bonus feature in The Phantom’s Curse is the Masked Phantom Re-spin feature, and this is activated when a stacked Phantom symbol appears on reel one, and a stacked mask symbol appears on reel five. Here the symbols that triggered the feature will turn into wild symbols and remain sticky for one free respin. This gives players a much greater chance at creating a high paying winning combination.

The Phantom's Curse Free Spins Round

Last but by no means least is the game’s extra spins round. This bonus feature is triggered when players find a chandelier symbol on reels one, three and five. Unlike normal extra spins rounds, players aren’t granted a specific number of extra spins when they start the round. Instead, a chandelier hands above the reels, and the round will continue until it falls!

The Phantom's Curse Free Spins Win

During the extra spins round, landing a masked Phantom symbol on a particular reel can result in a section of the rope holding the chandelier in place being cut. There are five ropes, and when all give are cut, the chandelier will fall and the feature will end.  However, it’s not all doom and gloom when a masked Phantom symbol appears however, as these symbols also act as wilds for the feature. Furthermore, every time a rope is cut, the masked Phantom symbol will turn fully stacked, giving you plenty of chances to create winning combinations.

NetEnt have been developing The Phantom’s Curse for well over a year and so it’s no surprise that the graphics and gameplay are both flawless. As a branded slot, we always knew that NetEnt would have gone the extra mile with this game and we’re very glad they did. Moreover, as the game uses HTML5 technology, it’s a dream to play from any device, including iOS and Android smartphones, as it’s both quick to load and responsive.

The Phantom's Curse Big Win

Last words…

All in all, The Phantom’s Curse is an incredible addition to NetEnt’s jam-packed branded roster. Although we were disappointed last year when the game didn’t come to fruition, as they say, good things come to those who wait and we think this game was definitely worth the extra few months we had to twiddle our thumbs!

Not only is The Phantom’s Curse aesthetically pleasing, but it’s also incredibly rewarding if you can manage to trigger one of the games three bonus features. Furthermore, as it’s available across all devices and with a low minimum bet limit, it’s a real crowd pleaser, even if you weren’t a fan of the Phantom of the Opera to begin with!
